Not all psoriasis is created equal and therefore it is essential that you get an expert diagnosis from a medical practitioner before you embark on any treatment.

Saying that, there are essentially five common types of psoriasis and just because there are different types, that doesn’t mean that you can experience more than one type of psoriasis at any given time. Likewise, your psoriasis type can alter from one type to another. These are the most common types of psoriasis:

Plaque Psoriasis: This is the most common types of psoriasis. The raised, red looking patches that appear on the skin, which can also take on a white or scaly appearance, are termed plaques. This type of psoriasis is estimated to account for about 80% of all psoriasis sufferers. It’s not uncommon for plaque psoriasis to come and go without medical intervention.

Guttate Psoriasis: This is the next most common type of psoriasis skin disorder and take on a more spot-like appearance. this type is more common in young adults and children. Sometimes, plaque psoriasis can morph into guttate psoriasis.

Pustular Psoriasis: This is a much more volatile type of psoriasis resulting in pus-filled bumps on the skin. These are referred to as pustules. They come and go within a matter of days and would normally be found on the hands or feet. Widespread pustular psoriasis on the body is considered to be a serious condition that can even be life-threatening.

Flexural Psoriasis: Also referred to as Inverse Psoriasis, this type is estimated to affect about 2-6% of all psoriasis sufferers. In appearance it is smoother and redder but also generally more tender to the touch. This type of psoriasis is more commonly found in areas where skin creases – such as armpits, behind joints, under breasts and generally places where the skin folds.

Erythrodermic Psoriasis: Again, quite a rare form of psoriasis but one which tends to cover a large percentage area of the body. Just like the pustular type, where psoriasis becomes generalized, essential bodily functions can be affected to the extent where they become life-threatening.
